Brethren: The Historical Collection

Hi All!

I'm very excited to share this news with you. As you may be aware, I've been adding minor factions to the Armies of the Ancients and Armies of the Dark Ages books over the last few months. I'm now at the point where the books can be updated to include these.

At the end of this month, it will be the 2 year anniversary of Brethren's commercial release so I will be releasing the updated books on the weekend of the 26th April.

In addition to these minor factions being added to the 'Armies of' books, I will also be including a number of changes. These include:

  • Lighter Background

  • Slightly larger font

  • Heroes are now separated into light, medium and heavy variants

  • Javelins are now reduced to 5 points

  • The Pilum is now it's own weapon

  • Almost all cavalry will now be able to equip the Lance

  • Dog Handlers and some additional light troops can now equip armour

The Rulebook has been revisited as well and more missions have been added and the random mission selection method has changed.

Before: Roll a D6, the result dictates the mission played.

Now: Roll a D3, this determines the deployment:

  • Opposing Armies

  • Ambush

  • Surrounded

Roll a D3, this determines the Objective:

  • Decimate

  • Assassinate (However one version is a rescue mission)

  • Objective Capture

This same random mission selection is also available for siege missions. With their deployment options being:

  • Surrounded

  • Assault

  • Opposing Fortifications

This changes the total available missions from 8 to 18. Many of the missions have also been made to be more scenario based. Rather than having a simple objective, there are set objectives for both the Attacker and Defender. Some of the missions have modifiers and special rules that make the mission unique.

The scenarios that I've always found to be the most interesting are the military actions that take place before a major battle. Ambushing for supplies or stopping reinforcements from reinforcing a defensive position. Assassinating a military commander to lower the morale and efficiency of the opponent etc. These are the themes of these missions, although as with the nature of Brethren, as the warbands grow in size, what would be small skirmishes can become major conflicts within themselves.

Now that we've discussed the changes to the books, I also want to announce a new book.

Brethren: Skirmish Tabletop Wargame - The Historical Collection

Since before release, I've wanted to have a hardback version of the book, however the books haven't been large enough to warrant it. Now however, with these new updates, minor factions and the recent Armies of the Empire's End release. I feel it is the right time. So I have compiled all of the books together to release in a 198 page hardcover book. This will be slightly cheaper than buying all of the books separately. For example, in the UK, to buy all 4 books online, the total cost would be £51.96. The Historical collection would be £49.99 which will also be available to buy on the 26th of April.

For those who have very kindly supported Brethren by buying books before now, I will be including all of the changes listed above and the missions in a free PDF. I am looking into a print-on-demand version of this and I am aiming to keep the cost of this as low as possible.

The same weekend as this release, my wife and I will be bringing Brethren to Wirral War-Con. The first convention I will have taken Brethren to outside of the South West of England. If you find yourself around the area. Please come by for a game!

Thank you very much for reading. Let me know what you think of these updates and what you are looking forward to!

Many Thanks

Matt
